Course Description: The primary goal of 8th grade English is to prepare students for high school classes and beyond. Through the reading of short stories, novels, and poetry, they will study various literary elements such as conflict, irony, theme, plot, foreshadowing, and symbolism (as well as many others). Through close reading and deep annotation of a variety of texts, students will learn to determine an author’s purpose and analyze the figurative language and other literary devices used by the author to achieve that purpose. There will be a heavy concentration on grammar concepts to improve communication skills in writing and speaking. Picking up new vocabulary from the literature will also encourage better writers and communicators. We will have a strong focus on writing as we analyze famous speeches, write formal critiques and analysis from the assigned literature, and incorporate ethos, pathos and logos in a formal argumentative essay. Students make a few presentations to the class and will be expected to participate in class discussions and listen attentively. Each semester culminates in a larger writing project that includes light research and citing sources.
A and B Classes are the same class offered at different times.
