Course Description: Our world and the media describing it is a cacophony of differing views and information that can be confusing and tangled. With so many available sources of information and vastly opposing opinions and “facts”, how does a Christian discerningly decipher the truth? This class will help students learn the importance of learning the history behind current events as well as how to read or listen to news sources with eyes and ears that are able to identify bias. Students will become like Dragnet Detectives and seek “just the facts, ma’am.” To accomplish this, we will first read and discuss the book The Fallacy Detective which will help the students learn to be discerning with information. With these concepts in place, we will begin looking at various current events researching their history in order to establish the why or the cause of the events. Then we will look at the events through the eyes of a wide range of news sources looking for bias, context, and particular emphasis, as well as comparing how effectively and thoroughly the resource provided the relevant facts. Finally, we will look at the event through the lens of God utilizing the Bible as our resource. Not only will these skills be important in being an objective and discerning adult regarding the ongoings of the world around them, but also these skills will be critical to the students while they are in college and challenged by professors, and then challenged by co-workers and leadership in the workplace and beyond. Having the ability to utilize research skills coupled with Godly discernment and wisdom will assist every aspect of their lives.
